Choose to Seek Direction

I’ll admit something about myself.

I have a hard time making choices over simple things.
There, I said it. I’m not proud of it.

My husband walks in and says, “Honey, I know it’s been a long day. Where would you like to go eat?”

“Oh, I don’t know. What do you want?”
“I asked you first!”

Can you relate?
This goes on and on, until we finally agree, with all that time wasted.

My other confession: I spend too much time deciding what to wear.
Sometimes it’s even a big decision what to wear to do yard work. Come on, that’s ridiculous.

I know it’s ridiculous. I need to do better.

But making a choice can be hard.
Not the silly ones above, but the real ones:

Should I take the new job?
Should I marry him?
Should we move?
Should I quit?

These are the choices that make life feel like it’s moving in slow motion.

We make our lists.
We ask everyone we know.
We fret. We worry. We obsess.
We make ourselves sick.

But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned something:
Most of the time, I can’t make these choices alone, and I shouldn’t.

One of the things I love about David is that he inquired of the Lord.

Again and again in the Psalms, David cried out to God.
When he didn’t know what to do, he waited and listened for God’s direction.

We also see the times he didn’t.
The times he rushed in, made a quick decision, and it didn’t go well.

Our Heavenly Father wants us to come to Him.
He wants to hear the struggle behind every big decision we face.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5–6)

We need to inquire of God.

So today, choose to seek His direction first.
Start by asking Him to guide every decision you’ll make.

Reflect & Respond

  1. Which kind of decision trips you up more: the small, everyday ones, or the big, life-changing ones?
  2. Read Proverbs 3:5–6. What does it look like, practically, to “lean not on your own understanding”?
  3. Think of a time you inquired of God before deciding something. What happened?
  4. What decision are you facing right now that you need to bring to Him first, instead of figuring out alone?
