I don’t know about you, but my motives are not always unmixed.
I try to convince myself they are. I really do. But pride has a way of slipping in through the back door when I am not looking. And once it settles in, it affects everything.
We are good at this, aren’t we? Performing on the outside while something very different is happening on the inside. We say we are fine when we are falling apart. We do the right things for the wrong reasons. We show up, smile, serve, and go home exhausted from carrying something we haven’t let anyone see.
We wear masks. And after a while, we forget we have them on.
Jesus has something to say about that.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Matthew 5:8 (NIV)
The Greek word for pure here is katharos. It was used to describe unmixed grain, unalloyed metal, and clean water. Nothing added. Nothing hidden. Nothing that doesn’t belong. Just the thing itself, undiluted and whole.
That is what Jesus is describing. A heart so completely devoted to God that it has no competing allegiances. No hidden agendas. No performance for the crowd. Just an undivided, wholehearted, single-minded devotion to the One who already sees everything anyway.
This is not about being perfect. If it were, none of us would qualify, and Jesus would have sent us all home before He even started the Sermon on the Mount.
This is about direction. About who holds the deepest part of you.
Life in the Kingdom of Heaven is not about polishing the outside while the inside quietly falls apart. Jesus is inviting us to stop living as slaves to our sinful desires and hidden agendas and begin living wholeheartedly toward Him instead. To lay the mask down. To stop the performance. To let Him have all of it, the mixed motives, the pride, the fear, the grief we haven’t named out loud yet.
And the blessing waiting on the other side of that surrender is breathtaking.
We get to see God.
Not someday. Now. In every situation, the good ones and the ones that are breaking our hearts. He becomes the lens through which we see everything. We rise above the fog. We live with clarity and focus that has nothing to do with our circumstances and everything to do with whose we are.
I am walking through something right now. A situation completely out of my hands, involving someone I love deeply. I cannot fix it. I cannot control it. Some days, it is all I can do to breathe through it.
But I am holding on to one single undivided thought.
God loves this person even more than I do. He has this. He is working in ways far beyond anything I could ever orchestrate or imagine.
And because I can see Him moving. Even now, even here. I can let the mask come down. I can lament honestly before my Father without pretending I am fine. I can trust what I cannot see because I serve a God I am learning to see more clearly every single day.
That is what a pure heart buys you, dear friend.
Not a perfect life. Not easy answers. Not circumstances that always make sense.
Just eyes that see God. In the middle of all of it.
And it turns out that is more than enough.
Where are you still wearing a mask before God? What would it look like to lay it down today and let Him see and hold exactly what is really there?
