Persevere

This blog was written in response to a prompt from the Five-Minute Writing community.

You’ve likely heard Aesop’s timeless fable of “The Tortoise and the Hare.” In this beloved story, two very different characters find themselves in an unexpected race. The hare, confident in his natural speed and agility, believes victory is guaranteed. After all, how could a slow, plodding tortoise possibly compete?

But the tortoise possesses something far more valuable than speed—unwavering determination. Step by steady step, he continues forward with quiet resolve. Even when the hare mocks him and boasts that he could take a leisurely nap and still claim victory, the tortoise doesn’t waver. He simply keeps moving.

And we all know how the story ends. While the overconfident hare sleeps, the faithful tortoise crosses the finish line first.

This ancient tale reminds us that perseverance often matters more than natural talent or favorable circumstances. In our fast-paced world, we’re tempted to believe that quick results and instant success are what truly count. But the tortoise teaches us otherwise. Steady faithfulness, consistent effort, and refusing to give up—these qualities carry us further than we might imagine.

Whether you’re facing a challenging season, working toward a long-term goal, or simply trying to grow in character, remember the tortoise. Keep taking that next step forward, even when progress feels slow. Perseverance has a way of surprising us all.

Moving ahead isn’t always easy for me. There are times I want to quit. As a writer, you can get discouraged when things aren’t moving like you want them to. You have to depend on others to get your work into the world, and it can be frustrating. Life is full of obstacles that get in our way and distract us from moving forward.

The Bible has much to say about perseverance. One of my favorites is the parable in Luke 18:1-8. There’s a widow who continues to press a judge about an injustice. She doesn’t give up until he answers her. This parable is an excellent teaching on not giving up. Jesus reminds us to keep coming to Him and asking Him in our prayers.

What do you need to ask God for with perseverance?

  1. We are selling our house. It’s a slow market in an unattractive area. I simply must accept that the sale is in God’s time and enjoy the time we have left here.
