Choice

I’m going to admit something about myself. I have a hard time making choices over simple things. There! I got that out in the open. I’m not proud of it. In fact, it’s very frustrating.

Example: My husband comes in and says; “Honey, I know it’s been a busy day for you. Where would you like to go out to eat.”

“Oh, I don’t know, what do you want?”

“I asked you first!”

Can you relate to this? This goes on and on. Finally, we agree but all of that wasted time!

My other issue that I really hate to admit, is that I spend way too much time trying to decide what to wear. My goodness, sometimes it’s a big decision on what to wear to do yard work. Come on! That’s ridiculous.

Here’s the thing, I know it’s ridiculous and I’ve got to do better. Making a choice can be difficult. I don’t mean the silly decisions above, but the ones like; should I take the new job? Should I marry him? Should we move? Should I quit my job?

These are the things that cause life to sometimes feel like we are moving in slow motion. We make our list. We discuss with everyone we know. We fret. We worry. We obsess. We make ourselves sick.

But, as I have aged, I realize that most of the time I can’t and shouldn’t make these choices alone. One of the traits I love about David is that he inquired of the Lord. We read in many of the Psalms that David cried out to God. He didn’t know what to do or what direction to take. He waited and listened for God’s direction.

We also see when David rushed in and made quick and rash decisions. Those times didn’t go very well.

Our Heavenly Father wants us to come to him. He wants us to share with him the struggles we face as we make big decisions. One of my favorite verses is found in Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” We need to inquire of God. Try to start each day asking God to help you in all the decisions you make today.

  1. Yes, we really shouldn’t make these choices and decisions without Holy Spirit. How often do I impatiently make up my own mind and then ask God to honour my choice, instead of the other way around?
