Music and Alzheimer’s

Music can have a profound effect on individuals with Alzheimer’s. Of course, each patient is different in their response and what type of music will vary with individual.

Here are some ways that music can positively impact the patient:

  1. Music can elicit an emotional response.

Music can evoke strong emotional responses. It can bring on feelings of joy, happiness, calmness, or nostalgia. Even in the advanced stages of the disease, patients may experience an enhanced emotional connection when other forms of communication may be difficult.

2. Music may help with some memory recall.

Familiar songs from their past can trigger memories and help them reminisce about significant events or experiences. We have seen this even when other memories are lost.

3. Music helps reduce anxiety and agitation.

Many patients experience restlessness and agitation because of confusion and frustration. Music can have a calming effect and help ease these symptoms, promoting relaxation and a sense of well-being.

4. Music can improve social interaction.

Group music activities can encourage social interaction an engagement with others. It provides an opportunity for shared experiences and connections with others who are singing along. It is a great way for caregivers and family members to join in with them.

5. Music can help with coordination and movement.

The rhythm and beat of the music can facilitate movement from the patient. It can also help them with balance and possibly their gait.

Music has a universal language. It can offer the connection that has been lost and help improve the quality of life for the Alzheimer patient. As noted above, this will be determined from patient to patient. Trained music therapist can also design individualized plans for your family member.
