One of the saddest scenes to me in the “Shawshank Redemption” is when Brooksy hangs himself. Brooksy was an older man who had been in prison many years. He is finally set free. But, he cannot understand the outside world. Too many things have changed since he was on the outside. He tries to work but he just doesn’t feel like he fits in. So, he commits suicide.
Too many times, christians live this same way. We have been set free from our past through the blood of Jesus but we continue to live defeated lives. There are different reasons why. Sometimes we cannot forgive ourselves. We let our past so consume us that we can’t really believe that we have been forgiven. Or other people continue to hold us in chains, making us continue to feel guilty.
I love the story in John 9 where Jesus heals the man born blind. No one wanted to believe that Jesus could heal this man. They couldn’t even allow this man to enjoy his new life. But, Jesus reminded him that in believing Him, he was no longer blind. He was free both spiritually and physically.
Don’t let the world hold you captive. Believe in the one who sets you free and live like it.
